The Peanut , also known as the groundnut is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics environments, being valuable to both small and large commercial exporters. It is classified as both a grain legume and, because of its high oil content, an oil crop. Atypically among crop plants, peanut pods develop underground rather than aboveground. It is this characteristic that the botanist Linnaeus used to assign the specific name hypogaea, which means “under the earth.”
Java peanuts are smaller in size with round, reddish-pink kernels. They are popular for their distinct flavor and crunchiness. Due to their size, Java peanuts are often used in the confectionery industry for making candies, chocolate coatings, and peanut butter.
Bold peanuts, as the name suggests, have larger and elongated kernels. They are known for their rich, nutty flavor and are commonly used for roasting and snacking. Bold peanuts are also used in the production of peanut oil, due to their higher oil content compared to other varieties.
TJ peanuts are a hybrid variety cultivated in Gujarat, featuring a mix of the characteristics of both Java and Bold peanuts. They have medium-sized, oval-shaped kernels with a slightly darker skin. This variety is versatile and can be used in various culinary applications, such as peanut butter, snacks, and oil production.
